“I don’t know why!”

I don’t have time to watch the video, but why is Quantas grounding the A380?

lack of demand
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

At least 747s can be converted into something useful, namely a freighter. Since KLM has a lot of combis the conversion should be fairly simple. I worked a ton of them at LAX. Lots of horses being transported for some reason. They made me long for the stench of jet fuel.
They should be able to haul a lot of toilet paper...

Man, at least I got to fly LAX-AMS on a KLM 747 Combi. Glad I made that happen when I had the chance.

COVID-19 is killing demand (and even more so with Trump’s bans), and the 747s and A380s are going to be the biggest, and probably the least efficient aircraft in the fleet (certainly if they aren’t full). Lufthansa grounded their A380s even before the bans were announced.

From Wikipedia (cut off for operators with fewer than 4) :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Boeing_747_operators
Obviously many of those are cargo, but there’s still decent numbers of passenger aircraft out there. However, except for the 747-8 which is larger and more efficient , most of those are slated for retirement (KLM had already planned to ditch the 747-400 by next year, so they are just accelerating), and the current drop in air travel will probably lead others to be retired or switched to cargo duties.
